Nepal Government Unveils Updated EV Tax Structure & Charging Station Subsidies

Clear Vision for Zero-Emission Public and Private Transport

The Ministry of Finance and Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) have jointly announced a landmark policy directive to maintain stable customs duties on electric four-wheelers while ramping up national charging infrastructure investments.

Current Customs & Excise Duty Tiers

To incentivize energy independence and curb petroleum imports, the customs duty on electric vehicles in Nepal remains stratified by motor capacity:

  • Up to 50 kW: 10% Customs Duty + 0% Excise Duty
  • 51 kW to 100 kW: 15% Customs Duty + 10% Excise Duty
  • 101 kW to 200 kW: 20% Customs Duty + 20% Excise Duty
  • 201 kW to 300 kW: 40% Customs Duty + 45% Excise Duty

NEA’s Highway Charging Station Rollout

NEA Managing Director confirmed the commissioning of 50 new 60kW/120kW dual-gun CCS2 chargers at key highway intersections. Private hotel and petrol pump operators can also avail of subsidized commercial electricity tariffs to host public charging hubs.

This initiative aims to alleviate highway range anxiety once and for all, making round-trips from Kathmandu to Pokhara, Lumbini, and Chitwan entirely seamless.
